Pentek offers many different series of 5 micron filters. There is the Pentek P5 spun polypropylene, the Pentek ECP5 pleated, the Pentek WP5 string-wound polypropylene, and the Pentek PD-5 polydepth filter. There are many advantages and uses for each of these filters and this article will help to describe what uses best fit each filter.
The first and most commonly used filter is the Pentek P5 spun polypropylene filter. The “P” Series filter is designed for purity and chemical compatibility. This filter has excellent chemical resistance and is not prone to bacteria attacks. The Pentek P5 filter is manufactured from 100% polypropylene fibers. The fibers have been carefully spun together to form a true gradient density from the outer to the inner surfaces. The coreless strength of the cartridges is achieved by sintering the many fibers into a solid matrix. The Pentek P5 filter is commonly used as a residential filter and is used frequently in home purification units, or as a pretreatment to a reverse osmosis unit.
The Pentek ECP5 pleated cellulose-polyester filter provides higher wet strength than regular cellulose and polyester fibers. The main advantage of the Pentek ECP5 is that is provides high flow rates and dirt holding capacity, while maintaining extremely low pressure drop. The ECP series cartridge endcaps feature a color-coding system for easy identification of micron ratings, with a white endcap signifying the ECP5 5 micron rated filter. This filter can be used in both residential and industrial applications with equal success.
Another commonly used filter is the Pentek WP5 string-wound polypropylene. The advantage to using the string-wound filters is the WP series is wound in a precise pattern to provide a greater surface area to help reduce fine sediment, including sand, silt, rust and scale particles. The Pentek WP5 filter has a higher dirt-loading capacity and greater efficiency than standard wound cartridges. This series of filters is most commonly used in residential and light commercial applications.
The final 5 micron filter that Pentek manufactures in a standard 10” filter is the PD-5 polydepth filter. The PD-5 will not impart and taste, odor or color to the water being filtered. The filter is manufactured from thermally bonded polypropylene microfibers to help ensure high efficiency. It also has a superior chemical resistance and is not prone to bacteria attacks. The PD series is an ideal filter for food and beverage applications and for a wide variety of industrial filtration situations, because of its low media migration property.
If you are looking for an inexpensive 5 micron filter for residential or light commercial use, than the Pentek P5 or the Pentek WP5 would be the filter you are looking for. If your use requires low pressure drop then your ideal filter would be the Pentek ECP5. Finally, if you are in the food and beverage industry, or have an application requiring low media migration than the Pentek PD-5 would be the ideal fit for your situation.
